Iconic Argyle

Pringle of Scotland has had an enduring love affair with the Argyle pattern since first developing it in the 1930's. The iconic diamond design was invented in Hawick by turning the knitting machine patterns 90 degrees creating the unique design.

The classic diamond pattern is originally derived from the tartan of Clan Campbell of Argyll in western Scotland and has been worn by Scottish Highlanders from the 17th century.

During the early 20th century Pringle adapted this tartan into a knitted intarsia design that became its signature 'Argyle'. It was adopted by the Duke of Windsor and became a hit with the fashionable set of this era.

If the words ā€œgolfing attireā€ conjure up images of lush green fairways, socks pulled up high, and diamond pattern jumpers ā€“youā€™re on the right track. Golf originated in Scotland and argyle attire has become an essential element of on course fashion. In the 1980ā€™s, the vivid colour combinations created by the argyle pattern became fashionable on the catwalk, and our argyle diamonds shined once more. The bolder and brighter the better!
